Backward by Design

The premise behind backwards by design is that we start with the end in mind. What knowledge, skills, attributes and personal development do we want students to have / achieved by the end of a course or program? Rather than focusing on the content and working from there, we can begin by considering who are learners are.

A student arrives in a learning experience with previous experiences and knowledge, along with perceptions of teaching and learning that significantly affect how much they will learn and to what degree of success. Considering student perceptions and approaches to learning before creating learning outcomes helps in accurately designing appropriate and rich learning experiences.

To begin:

  1. Consider the student learning perspective
  2. Identify 5-8 learning outcomes, that are concise, measurable and relevant
  3. Choose the relevant approaches you will use to assess and evaluate how and whether students are successfully meeting the learning outcomes
  4. Identify the content, teaching strategies and learning experiences that will ensure students are able to successfully meet the learning outcomes
